On June 4th, 2008 four friends will set out on, what will no doubt be, an unforgettable journey, traveling from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon... by bicycle. What follows are what we refer to as "mile markers", thoughts, stories, pictures and whatever else comes along with a trip like this to mark out our trail as we go. The map below will show the route we will have traveled once we get on the bikes, for now it shows a general overview on what we expect our trip to look like. If anyone knows of any "must-sees" near our route or know of any places we can stay leave us a comment. No promises on a daily update, but hopefully we can update a couple times a week so that those back home can experience the journey along with us. You can also view our updated photo album online. Hope you enjoy the ride!

Shawns Pre-Trip Thoughts.

"What in the world am I thinking!" Yeah that thought has definitely been going through my head a couple times throughout the past couple weeks of fully loaded riding. My legs scream at me already when I get into a stiff head wind, and that's in flat Delaware. How am I going to survive the Rockies?
But then I start to think about 3 months of no schedule, no tired days due to lack of sleep, no running from one event to another, no worry over the rise in gas prices. 3 months of being outdoors. 3 months of reading and thinking. 3 months of conquering that mountain pass that I had thought was impossible that morning. Hours of just me, my thoughts, my bike and beautiful scenery. Hours of discussions with my friends. Hundreds of conversations with strangers. Countless obstacles overcame, and countless memories made.
Will it be a rough summer? At times no doubt. I imagine there will be nights when I simply want to quit and go home. After 3 days of steady rain; days where everything possible that could go wrong, does, I'll wonder why I decided to attempt to this. But there is no doubt that I will look back on this summer as one of the greatest ever. I'm not typically the most adventerous person, so I'm looking forward to pushing myself to places and situations that I normally wouldn't feel comfortable in. I'm looking forward to becoming more comfortable striking up conversations with people that I've never met before. I'm looking forward to being stretched both physically and emotionally.
It's going to be a great summer!

Guys,

I know you are planning on seeing mount rushmore, but I don't know if you thought about devil's tower. It is across the border in Wyoming and may be close to your route. Check it out. Hope all goes well!

Dear Bruce,
You just don't seem to get enough of adventure. And it looks like the Congo didn't tire you out.
I enjoyed the pictures. I bet everything seems so clean compared to Lubumbashi.
Oh, and I have to admit I liked your description of life right now: "3 months of being outdoors..of reading and thinking...of conquering that mountain pass... Hours of just me, my thoughts... of discussions with my friends..." Enjoy it. The next time you will get to say that will be when your last child leaves for college.
Take care, and please don't get run over.
